Chris Ware Gets Fortune 500 Cover Commission. Inevitably, It Gets Rejected.

Creator of the sublime Acme Novelty Library, Chris Ware was recently commissioned to submit a cover for Fortune Magazine’s 500 issue. This is an economic magazine which annualy publishes it’s listings of the 500 wealthiest and most influential businesses and individuals.

Chris Ware may not have been the most sensible person to ask for this. Not only is he an insanely talented artist, but has a wry and cutting sense of humour that plays things very close to the bone. Needless to say his eventual submission is everything that someone who is even remotely familiar with his work would have expected. Unfortunately, this didn’t include the editors at Fortune magazine, who sought out something a little less topical.

In a perfect world, this would have been used.

It should really be studied up close!

Ha ha, that’s so cynical. I love the Tea Partiers rah rahing around the elephant shaped tea kettle. There should be more honesty in advertising and magazine covers etc. I would imagine they went for a far less faithful rendition of reality, that makes the top companies shitting on us look like a bright and cheerful thing.

I especially love the submerged houses and the teeny tiny sweatshops. Do you know any of Chris Ware’s work? I’ve been trying to bully Simon into buying the Acme Novelty Library for ages now. His work is always insanely detailed, acerbic and kind of harrowing, in a hollow, inertia drenched kind of way. I think you’d love his stuff too. I also wish that they would be more honest. I told u what the eventual cover was? It was a big 500, in GOLD! Because GOLD is GOOD! Jesus Christ o_0

I remember Don Hertzfeldt singing the praises of one of the Acme Novelty Library books, no. 19 now that I’m looking at them. I have no choice but to get one now! The way you describe it, it sounds like I’d just be wrong not to love it.

That’s poop about the final cover! Next year, Chris Ware can draw the Gulf of Mexico covered in oil and on fire in patches. Maybe the chosen cover will be a pony shitting diamonds and “EVERYTHING’S FINE, GET BACK TO WORK” as the tagline.
