Zombiehamster Mixtape #7

Mixtape7

This week I have been indulging in a great deal of older albums and so the majority of this weeks selections come from a period in the 1990′s when the Rock was good, the Hip Hop was good, the summers were longer and it was all trees around here.

I have included a few delights such as Primus’ storming ‘Here Come The Bastards’, one of the best early morning songs there is. Nas’ ‘The Message’ still remains one of my favourite songs of his, even with the Sting sample! Alice In Chains, Pantera, Machine Head and Rage all appear, reminding us why they achieved the legendary status they do today.

Copkiller was one of the first tapes that I ever owned. A friend gave me a copy in primary school that his brother got in Holland. My first contraband music, a lifetime of censory defiance was born in that seemingly insignificant moment. From there came the worlds of Messers Ice’s T and Cube, House Of Pain and Cypress Hill (Omitted here on the grounds of ‘I’m not in the mood to hear them’). A healthy interest in most noisey stuff lead me to become the all devouring music junkie that I am today. Trading tapes and compilations was always something I did regularly (also, having the right music could oftentime barter you out of a beating if you knew the potential pummeller’s music preferences), so it’s really a joy to be able to do them still.

This is also why I chose to do Mixtapes as opposed to Podcasts, I never used to stop each song when I was making C-90′s for people and jabber on in the middle of them, so I politely decline to start doing that.  As well as this factor, it would involve me sitting here talking to myself and that really would be the beginning of the end.

(Please note that I do enjoy many Podcasts and am in no way being curmudgeonly, I simply don’t think that anyone needs to hear me do one at this point in time.)

Enjoy!

Sunday Morning Movie ‘Run Ronnie Run’

Posted by zombiehamster On August - 9 - 2009

As I can’t logistically invite all of you round to mine to watch this with me, here’s one of David Cross‘ finest hours. DMX was once cited as the ‘Ronnie Dobbs Of Rap’, after seeing this you will understand exactly what that means. Jack Black also has one of his best cameos in this. Sit back and revel in ‘Run Ronnie Run

Where The Wild Things Are (New Trailer)

Posted by zombiehamster On August - 8 - 2009

Doesn’t this just look fabulous? I can’t wait!

Not sure about Karen O doing the music, seeing that she’s a talentless shit and all.

And Arcade Fire over the trailer, hmmmm, dunno about that.

Still, I didn’t make it, so who am I to judge it yet? Lets just hope it doesn’t have a crappy soundtrack that takes away from the monster magnificence.

Edit: No, I am actually cool with the Arcade Fire, I like Arcade Fire, I just despise most Arcade Fire fans. This is becasue they tend to be self righteous arse weasels who think that listening to certain bands makes you more intelligent.  Grrr. I maintain a lot of mental scars from my time running that record store.

Zombiehamster Mixtape #5 ‘Death Country’

Posted by zombiehamster On August - 7 - 2009

Mix5

It’s Friday. That’s Mixtape day! This week’s will not only divide opinion, but will probably scare off all the extra traffic that last week’s Mike Patton one brought in.

Ah well, I did say that they would be varied. ^_^ This is the shit I like peoples.

This week’s features some of the best Country (and some stuff that was included simply becasue it rocks) that is out there, not that bullshit country that you hear on the radio, or that namby pamby ‘Alt Country’ that was lauded by the rock press the last few years. Scoundrel country, vagabonds, drunkards and hoodlums. Mostly in celebration of the fact that Hank III is beginning his very first European tour along with his badass metal band ‘Assjack‘ (who are also on here), something that I am very excited about. Make sure to check out the tracks here and to go to the shows if he comes round your way. Check his website HERE. Also check out Gravewax Records, they do fantastic work and are one of the best indie labes out there right now.

There are also several tracks by another of my favourite bands ever, Those Poor Bastards, who should be the biggest thing in the world ever, but aren’t for some unfathomable reason. There’s some guitar shredding magic from Wildhearts frontman Ginger, a Devil courtin’ ditty from the sublime .357 String Band. There’s abject misery from the Handsome Family, an acapella Leadbelly cover from Nick Cave, some beardy washboard goodness from The Reverend Peyton’s Big Damn Band. Why am I still trying to convince you?

So, get into that rocking chair, load up the shotgun, place it firmly under your chin, start drinking some whiskey and if you make it to the very end, you get a special prize. If not, you can join me and the rest of this devislish crew down in Hell, we’ll be at the bar.

This magnificent piece is called “Jack’s Imaginary Friend” and is by an artist called Sean Clarity.

I found it at THIS website, which specialises in works of art which take their inspiration from cult movies. How could I not love it? Here’s a few more:

Alice In Chains ‘Unplugged’

Yes, you really should watch all of this. It’s the best of all the ‘Unplugged’ series.

What a voice.
