Black Raven and the Poe Poe.

Posted by zombiehamster On October - 29 - 2008

In 2001, I was lucky enough to attend a three hour, one man play on the life and times of Edgar Allan Poe. “Why was this lucky?” you cry, “Burn in Hell you uncultured ruffian.” I cry, “Get out of my house.” you cry in return. “NEVER” is my retort, but alas, I digress, and I don’t even know what that means.

So, before you so rudely distracted me, I was telling you a story. There was an additional joy to be taken from this experience, as the play was written, directed and performed by Poe expert, Goonie/Hobbit fathering, Nice cool glass of OJ enjoying, Gomez Addams playing legend – John Astin.

Yes indeedey, Astin brought his one man spectacular; Edgar Allan Poe: Once Upon a Midnight round our way that hot, hot July evening. Poe has always been a great love of mine, I hope to study him in greater detail should I succeed in my University applications this year. John Astin shares this affinity, his passion, knowledge and performance ability astounds and bewilders. He is a dead ringer for Poe, which is a great aid, and the Boston twang adds an air of great authenticity.

The Raven, is often quoted, parodied and referenced by twatty goths. This should not detract in any way from your perception of this magnificent work of poetry.  So, as we approach Halloween, Samhain & Celtic New Year, take some time to examine one of the true masters of terror, and relish in the otherworldly delights of Edgar Allan Poe.

Oh, all right, for ol’ time’s sake, get your clicky fingers at the ready……………

It’s always horror week really, but we’re pulling out all the stops for now. After 8 years of searching, THIS was aquired and viewed last night. It is quite possibly one of the most underplayed, innovative and original horror flicks ever. Search out Mike Pattons version of the excellent theme song to soundtrack your Halloween, this my friends, is Spider Baby!!!!! Rob Zombie, we want a word with you.

In fact, here’s the original theme. Which will not be leaving my head for quite some time.

Before Nu Metal ruined everything…………….

….there was a close association between what was at the time, truly innovative hip hop and the more interesting rock acts of the day. I have been listening to a lot of my old records recently and it only emphasises just how disappointed I am with so much contemporary music. Here are some of the tracks that have been getting repeated play over the last few days. Remember, it was always sunnier in them days, eeeeh and it were all trees round here. In reality, my apartment block is built on  an area that was all trees and fields when I moved here. Christ, I’m old, aren’t I? No! I’m hip, I’m with it….honest. Whatd’ya mean you don’t remember Teenage Fanclub? Oh dear.

Faith No More & The Boo Ya Tribe “Another Body Murdered” (Judgement Night Soundtrack 1993)

Teenage Fanclub And De La Soul “Fallin’” (Judgement Night Soundtrack 1993)
